Cranberry
This is a native American plant closely related to the blueberry and has been used for centuries in both healing and cooking.
In traditional medicine cranberries were used for treating wounds and tumours and also to prevent scurvy, a gum and bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency in Vitamin C. More recently cranberry has been used for urinary tract infections.
In the 1920’s it was discovered that people who consumed large amount of cranberries had more acidic urine. The cranberry was found to contain high levels of hippuric acid, which has been shown in studies to have a direct action on the urinary tract. Also other constituents in cranberry appear to interfere with the way in which bacteria cling to the wall of the bladder when we urinate and cause a burning sensation.
Take supplements which are equivalent to at least 5000mg of fresh cranberries daily.
