Chromium
Chromium is a trace element which is essential in the metabolism of sugar.
Because of this it is often called Glucose Tolerance Factor, or GTF- a complex of chromium, niacin and amino acids.
It is also vital in the synthesis of cholesterol, fats and protein.
Chromium helps maintain stable blood sugar levels through the utilisation of insulin and may be used by diabetics.
As chromium is lost by intense farming and modern processing methods, studies show that the typical western diet is deficient in this trace element. A diet high in sugar, white flour and highly refined foods, increases the need for chromium and therefore our normal blood sugar levels are jeopardised.
Chromium is best absorbed in the form Chromium picolinate, which has shown promising results in both insulin utilisation and blood cholesterol control.
Chromium also plays a role in fat metabolism, although exactly how is not known yet.
