Glucosamine
Did You Know? Glucosamine sulphate is made in the body from a sugar (glucose) and an amino acid (glutamine), but this is a slow process and glucosamine is often in short supply.
Glucosamine is needed for the production of cartilage, and helps to thicken the synovial fluid that oils and cushions the joints. Glucosamine also strengthens the jelly-like centre of the intervertebral discs in the spine.
Taking glucosamine sulphate supplements can hasten healing in people suffering from sports injuries (eg torn cartilage, sprained ligaments or strained tendons), rheumatism, arthritis and back problems such as a prolapsed (slipped) disc. Studies suggest that glucosamine improves the pain, swelling and tenderness of arthritis by over 70 per cent. Eight out of ten users notice a significant improvement within two weeks, and some people find that taking glucosamine for two months was more effective than taking the painkiller, ibuprofen. Glucosamine is often combined with other helpful supplements such as chondroitin (needed for cartilage repair) and green-lipped mussel extracts, which can reduce inflammation.
