    Garlic

Garlic is among the world’s most popular flavouring agents and gives a sweet, pungent boost to an endless array of foods, with desserts being the only notable exemption. The edible bulb or “head” grows beneath the ground and is made up of sections called cloves, each clove encased in its own parchmentlike membrane.

Garlic was praised by the ancient Egyptians for its strength-enhancing properties and therapeutic powers. Most of garlic’s health benefits, come from more than 100 sulphur compounds, particularly the most pungent, allicin. Several studies have shown that garlic has heart benefits, especially reducing the stickiness of blood platelets which are associated with the development of hardening of the arteries. Garlic has also been found to aid circulation, have antibacterial and anti-viral properties and may aid cholesterol metabolism in the body. Garlic acts as a powerful antioxidant and blocks the formation of nitrates in the body which have been linked to the development of degenerative diseases. It is therefore very useful in maintaining a healthy immune system. It is recommended that supplements contain 4000mcg of allicin per tablet (that found in a whole garlic clove).
