    Magnesium

    Magnesium helps to maintain healthy muscles (helping them to relax), RNA and DNA synthesis, and healthy nerve function. Magnesium has been shown to be helpful in many conditions where muscles spasm, or tighten, including PMS and asthma, irregular heart beats. Magnesium supplements have also been used for pre-eclampsia.



    Magnesium is a mineral involved with more than 300 enzyme systems. The body contains about 25 grams of magnesium, which is divided in roughly equal portions between the skeleton and soft tissue. About a third of skeletal magnesium is on the surface of the bone and acts as a reservoir to maintain the extracellular magnesium concentration. Magnesium is involved in protein synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism and the contraction and relaxation of muscles. It is found predominantly in legumes, whole grains, vegetables (especially green leafy vegetables), seeds, and nuts (especially almonds). Deficency symptoms include confusion, disorientation, loss of appetite, depression, muscle contractions and cramps, tingling, numbness, and abnormal heart rhythms. People who may wish to supplement with magnesium include, women with Pre-menstrual syndrome (stomach cramps), athletes, menopausal women, those with parathyroid disease and osteoporosis sufferers. The Recommended Daily Allowance of magnesium is 300mg. This is also the Upper Safe Level. Therefore it is not recommended to take above this level.
