    Iron

Iron, is a mineral found in two ionic forms in the body;in a reduced state as ferrous iron and in an oxidized state as ferric iron. Most of the iron in the body is found in the hemoglobin of red blood cells and in the myoglobin of muscle cells where it is required for oxygen and carbon dioxide transport. Iron also functions in the electron transport chain and other energy cycles. It is also an essential cofactor in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

Iron is found in haem form from flesh foods such as red meat, chicken and fish, and non-haem form from plant foods such as wholegrain breads and cereals and lentils. Haem iron is best since it does not have to be converted by the body, unlike non-haem iron. Also foods rich in haem iron can help to absorb iron from non-haem sources. Signs and symptoms of deficiency include anemia, lethargy, cognitive impairment, developmental delay, amenorrhea, hair loss, enlarged liver, and fatigue. Iron deficiency in pregnancy has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and increased perinatal maternal mortality. People who may wish to supplement with iron include, women with heavy menstrual periods, pregnant women, athletes (particularly female), people with anaemia, vegetarians and vegans. The Recommended Daily Allowance of iron is 14mg and the Upper Safe Level is 15mg daily.
